Evaluation of Teaser Trailer – Chased

In our teaser trailer, we used all of the technical aspects of media to create an effective teaser trailer for our film concept 'Chased'. The trailer begins with our ident, which I feel shows off our production company's logo effectively while remaining quick and snappy, as to keep time to a minimum. The ident was fast but memorable, and provided a suitable opening to our teaser trailer.

Our trailer then continues with some clips, with slow paced editing that speeds up as more of the villain is shown. This style of editing was our attempt to create some suspense, and I believe we were fairly successful. I believe this could have been improved had we had more time, but I think we did well considering the time restraints. We very quickly cut and faded between shots of the villain towards the end, giving the idea that he was moving very fast towards the camera. We didn't use any filters or effects on the video, as we believed that the lighting and production of the original clips was of a high enough quality. The lighting in the location was great, and this definitely helped us to create the feel and atmosphere needed in a horror teaser trailer.

We used a variety of shot types, including handheld camera shots, long shots, medium shots and over the shoulder shots. This variety helped us maintain some of the atmosphere, as the handheld view allows the viewer to put themselves in the main character's shoes and almost experience the fear of being chased themselves. The long shots of the villain closing in create an almost 'out of body experience' with the lighting looking almost surreal. This brings forward the idea of the villain being supernatural and ghost-like.

We used text to show institutional information like a release month and a facebook page, but also to say things about the film like in other teaser trailers. For example, we had text saying 'This November' as institutional information, but also to say 'Prepare to be...' to create a build up to the final show of the film title 'Chased.' We also kept a consistent style and font for all text for consistency's sake.

For our sound, we decided to cut all production sound and add no foley sound, relying on music to create the atmosphere. I believe that this was a good idea as we had limited time on editing the sound. Instead of worrying about finding, creating and adding our own foley sound, we could spend more time tweaking the music to create just the right atmosphere. I believe that this worked to an extent, but we could have improved on the music to some degree if we'd had more time. I feel that some of this makes the trailer feel slightly empty and missing something, but I believe it is effective anyway.

Our teaser trailer was for the horror genre, and was made clear with the following production choices. Our narrative involved a woman running through a forest, outmatched by a supernatural being, which is based upon a stereotype of the horror genre. We used the stereotype of the female being chased, as is used in many horror films. The villain was a man dressed in black, with most of his face covered which immediately suggests that he is the antagonist.

A big part of our trailer was using lighting to highlight things in our scene. The mise-en-scene of the long shot of the antagonist teleporting highly uses lighting to emphasise and make the audience focus on certain parts of the scene. For example, the woman laying on the ground is highlighted by a beam of light, which clearly shows her in the foreground of the scene. The bright lighting in the forest highlights the antagonist's back clothing well against the background, helping to create the ominous feeling of the scene. This scene creates a very vivid image for the trailer.

I asked some people three questions about my teaser trailer to get an idea of what things went well in others' eyes, and what to improve on.

I asked: From this teaser trailer, would you consume the product advertised? Explain your reasons why?

Maybe, I wouldn't go out of my way to see it but I wouldn't mind it either because it doesnt seem that scary.”

Is the genre and storyline of the product obvious? Explain why it is apparent/not apparent?

Not 100% but yeah it's pretty obvious. I thought it seemed to be a bit brightly lit for a horror film.”

What sort of audience do you believe the product is aimed at and why?

Non-hardcore horror fans, people who enjoy a good scare but don't want to be scarred for life.”

The second person said:

From this teaser trailer, would you consume the product advertised? Explain your reasons why?

Yes I would, because I'm an avid fan of horror movies and this looks like a good horror movie with new ideas.”

Is the genre and storyline of the product obvious? Explain why it is apparent/not apparent?

Not so much the storyline isn't THAT obvious but the genre definitely is because the suspense the trailer actually creates spooks your out already. Whereas the story isn't as much seen.”

What sort of audience do you believe the product is aimed at and why?

I think its aimed at teens who like horror movies because it doesn't seem scary enough for teens but seems scary enough for only teens and up to be able to see it.”

Looking at these responses, I do agree with what they say. I think that our storyline wasn't fleshed out in the trailer, but I feel that it was more effective at teasing, not giving away any information. I did not expect people to say that it lack scariness - But I understand that perhaps the use of bright sunlight changed the mood of the film to a brighter tone. I was surprised to find that people didn't mention the sound, as I thought that was one of the major points of improvement for the trailer. Overall, I believe that we created an effective and interesting horror teaser trailer.

Evaluation - Dan

In making a teaser trailer project I think we did very well. First of all we created clear ident, bowman shooting into target. Ident is in black and white colours(black relates to horror genre movies), images in ident is big and you can clearly see them, that's what I think it makes it effective. Also the text in trailer is effective because it adds more tension to it and there is not much of it so audience will not get bored by reading. Also background piano music we used is effective, it supports the horror genre because it is dramatic. We edited the trailer good as well because we added cuts and jump shots in fast phase which adds impresion of being in trouble/chased, action and tension. To make our trailer even better we used a variety of shots like extreme long shot, long shot, handheld, overshoulder to highlight specific surroundings like forrest, victim and antagonist. Overall our teaser trailer is good but if we could change something I would improve the background music at the end.

We were working on horror genre. We made this clear by introducing the protagonist and antagonist because protagonist is a victim which is scared and is running away and antagonist is in black clothes ( black relates to horror, fear and trouble). Also we made clear that it is horror movie by introducing our narrative. It is a victim trying to survive and solve the problem and she is chased by antagonist, that is typical for horror genre movies. You can also tell that it is a horror genre movie because of environment we filmed, it is in "dark" forrest.

I showed this trailer to 3 different people. They all said that they would like to watch this movie because teaser trailer looks interesting.

Also they all said that it is obviously a horror movie. Because of the protagonist, antagonist, environment and music used.

They thought that the movie is aimed at 16+ audience because it is a horror movie and usually horror movie audience is 16+.

I think all 3 people responded to our trailer as we wanted them to. They all agreed that it is a horror movie and they all would like to watch it.

Evaluation - Laura Norton

I believe that the techniqual quality of our teaser trailer is good as we were able to achieve everything we wanted when it came to ideas. I felt that our ident was very successful as it was simple but yet effective, it included an image of a man with a bow and arrow shooting at a target. The target would then slide across the screen with a sound effect of an arrow. I felt this was effective as it related to our production company name and the timing of the sound effect was accurate. We used four lots of text throughout our teaser trailer; I found this added tension to our trailer and also split the different shots up to help the story of the trailer. These were fairly easy to add to the trailer but also very effective. In our trailer we have a variety of music this was added by selecting different pieces of garage band clips and combined them together. We did have Foley sound (moves) in our trailer but we felt that it worked better without them. I also think that our editing of the trailer worked well as the transitions between each shot were equal. We also managed to keep our trailer under the twenty second time limit and still included everything we wanted. During filming we wanted to include a variety of camera shots, we manages to do this by using handheld shots, medium shots, long shots, extreme long shots and high shots. We used handheld shots to add more tension to the trailer and also to add mystery to the trailer and so the viewer doesn’t know who the victim is. I felt this idea worked well as it attracts the viewers’ attention. If I had to change anything about the trailer it would be the end of the sound track as I thought that is wasn’t as good as we could have made it.

The genre of our teaser trailer is horror; we wanted to make it apparent to the viewers by making the narrative clear by relating the tittle and characters to the genre. The characters were two opposite characters, one was an innocent young girl and the other was a dark and dull villain. The micro elements in our trailer also helped set the genre such as the handheld camera work, the cutting of the trailer (editing), the shaft of light and the location it was filmed in.

First viewer:

1.       I would definitely go and watch this film at the cinema as I want to know what happens next!

2.       Is the genre horror?

3.       I think the audience for this film is probably people who really like horror films, maybe younger people or males.

Second viewer:

1.       I don’t know if I would as I don’t really like these types of films.

2.       I would say horror but I’m not too sure as I don’t really watch horror films.

3.       I would say most teenagers

Third viewer:

1.       Yes it looks very interesting

2.       Horror?

3.       I don’t really know!

Teaser Trailer Final Product - Chased

Our task was to produce our own teaser trailer. We chose to create a horror trailer for a film named 'Chased'. We choose the genre horror and we think that our teaser trailer reflected it well.

We used typical conventions of a horror film such as a villan and a victum. In our trailer we didnt reveal much in the same way a teaser trailer wouldnt but enough to get the audience attention. We shared the roles when filming and editing the trailer.

We think overall it went really well and we produced a good teaser trailer. However if we had to improve it we would of added more sound to the end of the trailer to add more tension. All together we thought the final product was really good and we worked well as a team.

Teaser Trailer Filming

We were asked to begin filming for the Teaser Trailer for our film 'Chased'.

We managed to get a variety of shots to cover the ideas we put on our storyboard. We effectively used costume and different shot types to create horror conventions. We felt that the acting and filming went well, and we have got the shots we needed to create an interesting horror trailer.

Storyboard Task

Our task was to create a storyboard for our thriller teaser trailer, named Chased.

We had a character running through the woods, being chased by a person in a dark hoody. We are going to use handheld camera shots and long shots to create the effect of someone being chased.

It also includes our ident and our other ideas for the trailer, including institutional information and titles.

The costume that we need are a dark hoody, and just regular clothes for the running character.

We don't need any extra props.

We thought the task went well and we think we have made a very good storyboard.

Key points to ‘Don’t Tell the Bride’ Teaser trailer

·         It uses moving text to emphasise the main points about the previous episodes (plus sound)

·         Voiceover all the way through the teaser trailer

·         Uses close-ups on the brides to show their emotions

·         Adds  tension gradually through the trailer by building the music up

·         Leaves cliff-hangers to make you want to watch the new episode

Logo/Idents

For our task we had to create a logo and ident. We called our production company Target. For our logo we decided to use a outline of a man shouting a arrow at a target board. When creating our ident we had a sound of a arrow hitting a target board then our production name was then showed. We think it went really well and it showed our logo and production name.

Film Noir

For our task we had to create our own film noir.We were given a collection of small film clips and we had to work in a team to put them together to make a short clip. We also had to add filters and change the contrast so we looked more like a film noir film. We think it went really well and worked well as a team.
